Editor and Publisher just posted an interesting article about The Deseret News vs. the Salt Lake Tribune and the possible extinction of one or the other. Here is an excerpt:

The Trib currently has a higher circulation, 120,000 readers, and the Deseret News has over 74,000 readers. But it is the Deseret News, not the Tribune, that reported a growth in readership this last quarter. That’s interesting because most newspapers are losing readership. In fact, so many papers are in trouble in this country there is actually a website devoted to watching their decline at http://www.newspaperdeathwatch.com
What does this mean when trying to get your news out? Well, both city papers are still alive and reporting to tens of thousands of people. Even though it is true, newspapers are in trouble, they are still a valuable resource in getting your news out to the general public.
Utah News Source has gone through and categorized every reporter and what they cover so your company news and press releases will go to the right person at each paper. We also send your news to the Valley Journals, with a circulation of 314,000 (of course you’ll need to break that up into each area covered individually).
