In some cases, the deadline caused consumers to choose a vehicle that didn’t best suit
their needs or budget,” says Utah auto buying and leasing agent , Ted Holmgren.

Salt Lake City, UT - “Although Cash for Clunkers was helpful in stimulating the economy and generating sales for dealerships, it wasn’t a “one-size-fits-all” solution.  In some cases, the deadline caused consumers to choose a vehicle that didn’t best suit their needs or budget,” says Utah auto buying and leasing agent, Ted Holmgren. Holmgren works for helpingyoubuyacar.com, a consumer accounting agency that helps people find the best car for their budget.

His friend, Brandon Butler, had already gone to several dealerships the weekend before the Cash for Clunkers deadline to debate trading his “clunker,” a 1998 Mitsubishi Montero Sport, for a new vehicle.  However, as enticing as the incentive was to trade in, such a large financial decision was too important for Butler to decide on a same-day purchase.  “I wanted a day or two to think about the purchase, and the deadline I was up against simply didn’t allow for that.”

While shopping at a local Subaru dealership that same weekend, Holmgren helped Butler identify a 2009 used Subaru Legacy that was selling for nearly $6,000 less than the MSRP on the same new 2009 model.  “The car was exactly the same, except the used one was a different color, had 16,000 miles on it and cost $6000 less.”  Now that the Cash for Clunkers program has ended, Butler is taking a second look at the used model.

Even after Cash for Clunkers, is it still a good time to buy a car?  “Absolutely,” says Mr. Holmgren. “Dealerships have experienced a temporary boost to sales with Cash for Clunkers, but sales are still down significantly from last year.  Two manufacturers have gone through bankruptcy proceedings and Toyota, once considered impenetrable to hard economic times, has experienced its first net loss in decades.”  Consequently, dealerships are still offering generous incentives and are willing to negotiate.
